This doesn't really feel like I'm playing a game as it's so incredibly simple. I'm playing on hard and I've never really had this experience before with a game where I feel like I lack any agency and am merely unfolding each story beat.
The puzzles are next to non-existent and the dungeons are incredibly brief.
I have yet to unlock new vocations but I'm not sure of the need for exploration, for finding new equipment, for varying playstyles as there's no challenge that necessitates any variation.
The story is also just a series of vignettes where you can see the improvements of later entries like eleven where the time spent learning about these characters is so brief that there is this heavy reliance on hyperbole or death to immediately elicit a universal feeling rather than properly pacing a scenario to naturally develop player concern.
Yeah, EVERYTHING feels rushed, every scenario feels like it's just hurtling towards the next moment without any sort of in between. That's probably as the world they've created here is incredibly small so there isn't any space between. I've never noticed the need for those traversal gaps before now but they allow the world to breathe I suppose.
I would recommend this to a very young crowd who perhaps wants their first dragon quest experience but it may also stymy any further interest as it is almost not good enough to make you want to play other dragon quests, but in comparison, every other dragon quest I've played besides this has been far better.
I don't know what to make of it. Here's our worst so now maybe you'd like to try our best? Was that the thinking?

This game is absolutely amazing, as long as you ignore Lucky Panels and pretend it doesn’t exist.

Let me start by saying that I did ( not that long ago) play trough some of the older entries on the original plattforms (including V and VII). With that in mind I can say that just from the pacing alone the Remake was much more enjoyable to me, specificaly the intro section of the game drags in the original for a very long time. The Exploration was also streamlined which is good and bad, depending on what you expect from a game like this, but you will not get lost at least.

Furthermore, I personally enjoyed the visual realisation of this remake. A clear stylised direction which was consistent troughout the whole experience. I respect when devs have a clear picture in mind and craft something special with it. Some people find the look somewhat "uncanny" but decide for yourself on this one.

Gameplay is what you would expect from a Dragon Quest game, all in all relatively simple with unlockable vocations which give some freedom of choice. Overall the game (like most DQ games) is easy enough that you can choose whatever you like and run with it. I personally wish the resource management, including MP, would be a bit more challenging like in the original, because it is barely a consideration when playing the game.

Definetly a game for all ages. If you have younger kids, it is a good DQ entry to start of with. Cute, charming, accessible.

I will be waiting for Remake of V and VIII now, pretty please.

I'm a big fan of the Dragon Quest series but I've never played Dragon Quest VII until now. I played the demo for 5 hours and I was loving it so much I bought the game. I'm so impressed by the graphics and the voice acting. (Especially Prince Kiefer) Both make this a very immersive experience. Dragon Quest VII has become my most favorite game of the series! I'm here for the story so I'm playing it on an easy setting. You can make it harder if that's what you want. The game is broken up into individual short stories with and over arching main storyline. It all ties together and it just works well. If you've never played a turn based rpg this game is the perfect place to start. I highly recommend this game to everyone!

The game is a streamlined version of the original but with updated graphics and gameplay.

Definitely recommend and I hope they can do the same to all their games. I boght the deluxe version day 1.

It's just a shame they removed monster training and the monster town. I hope they add it as DLC at some point.

Another excellent remake. From the perspective of someone that beat the ps1 version back in the day - The changes to streamline the game are much appreciated. To the people concerned about the "cut content" don't worry, there's still enough back tracking and re-exploring of areas you've already been that you'll be satisfied. Main story completion on normal difficulty was 40 hours and I rarely had to take the game off auto battle so if that sounds bad you might want to start on the higher difficulty.

I liked it. I've still got a few things to wrap up for achievements. but it's an overall improvement. The pacing was much improved. I didn't like the having two jobs instead of learning skills and carrying them over. Monster hearts add variety and strategy. I recommend.

My fellow completionists, i think we can all agree with this : f*** lucky pannel.

Aside from that the game is very good and i had a lot of fun despite all the hand holding.

Love the series and have played through every game, including the DS version of DQ 7. That being said, this version sucks. The pacing of the gameplay is too quick and leaves no room for appreciating its environments, stories, or characters either from an artistic or writing point of view. The character writing skips to the tropes of each of them and leaves no space for proper emotional connection, individuality, or growth. Each character is simply their caricature. The writing of the individual plots suffers from practically the same issues in reference to story beats this time, it skips to the payoff or emotional pull as quick as it can without any sense of payoff or intrigue. It's almost insulting, like it’s asking the player to clap whenever something happens. The game introduces a “chat” button that checks in on party members that turns out to be used as a glorified objective tracker/“yellow paint” for the most part rather than a bit of fun character writing for specific moments or areas during your travels. The gameplay itself has undergone a huge change for this specific game that, for some reason, no one is bringing up and it's one of the reasons the game is so much easier: Party members choose their action as their turn comes up in the list. Typically with Dragon Quest you have to choose all of your party’s actions at the start of a round before any actions happen at all, this means that part of the difficulty comes from a risk/reward relationship with predicting the damage you will take during that round of actions. But, in this game every action you take is reactive since action choices come up as it becomes another character’s turn in the round. All of that combined with enemy stats being lesser: HP being lower, defence being worse, and their damage being lower makes for a game that can literally play itself. Seriously, simply set the Tactics of the whole party to “Fight Wisely” and the game will actually fully beat itself. If you turn up the difficulty it will still beat itself, it will just take longer, it’s sad. The areas, both overworld and dungeons/towns, are tiny and simplistic. This means that any piece of “explorable” land can be understood and practically fully explored in less time that it takes to say the word linear. It’s a shame, the game is beautiful and the music fantastic, but you spend so little time in these places that it is simply never given the time to shine.
tl;dr the game is extremely simple in practically every conceivable way from game design to writing to combat and it pushes you through its story like it wants you to finish it before you can start thinking.
It's sad, because this series is beautiful and is typically some of the most fun I’ve had playing any RPG, but this is easily one of the worst in the series.
Go play DQ 5 or DQ 8 or DQ 11 they are all substantially better in every way.
